Why choose a band to play at your wedding?

We asked Andy Wagner of Bigshot - a local live band for his totally unbiased opinion!

Let’s face it, there’s a lot to consider when planning your big day - the church, the venue for the reception, the invitations, the food, the flowers, the photographer - the list goes on and on. One of the choices you need to make is for the entertainment at the reception. This usually comes down to choosing between a disco or a live band, or both.

So why choose a live band rather than a disco? For me, and for all of the brides and grooms I have played for over the years, there really is nothing to beat the experience of dancing to a live band. It transforms an ‘ordinary’ reception into a real event - one that your guests will remember forever.

The first dance is always a special moment, and one that is enhanced by dancing to a live band. We have had occasions where the bride and groom have a special song that they wish to make their first dance, but would like it to be an acoustic version. That’s no problem to us, but might cause a DJ a bit of a problem!

We had one situation where the bride’s sister wanted to sing Wind Beneath My Wings to the bride at the reception. It was a special song from their childhood. We accompanied her and there really wasn’t a dry eye in the house.

With the popularity of shows such as X Factor, everyone thinks they’re a singer, and at many weddings we are asked if Uncle Fred can get up and sing with us. We love this - interaction with our audience is the best feeling in the world, and usually after one does it, there’s a queue of people wanting to have a go. While we don’t expect you want your event to turn into a karaoke evening, a few people getting up and singing is great fun, and one that your guests will remember forever.

At most weddings the guests vary in age considerably. We take this into account and play music from all eras to ensure that there is something for everybody to enjoy. For young people this is often their first experience of live music, and they love it.

We are happy to play music over our pa between our sets, so you really get the best of both worlds when you book us.

We are all very experienced musicians, with professional pa, lights, full PAT testing on all our equipment, and public liability insurance of £5 million. Although we do this for the sheer enjoyment we get out of playing live, we treat each performance with thorough professionalism to ensure that you and your guests have a fantastic time.

As a reminder of your evening we’ll present you with a framed set list, signed by the guys in the band, as a small memento of your big day.

We will liaise with the organiser at your venue to ensure that there is enough room for us and enough power points etc. All you need to do is book us, and then forget about us - you’ll have enough organising of everything else to do to keep you busy.

If you’d like to know more please visit our website at www.bigshot.org.uk , where you will be able to see what we look like and hear what we sound like.

I look forward to having the opportunity of playing for you on your special day!
